Cozy Scandinavian Kitchens
What can I tell you? I can't resist even MORE Scandinavian kitchens! I was cleaning up my desk (I probably have 100 magazines in my office) and this one recent magazine had such great images in it. They're cozy, they're woody, if not in the cabinetry, then in the surrounding walls.
I decided to show the last image of the oak door because oak is still quite unpopular in the U.S. But, look at that finish. It's new, fresh, and very sophisticated. This is not the "golden oak" finish that we once knew. From Interior Magasinet from Norway.

Interesting to note that all these Scandinavian Kitchens have recessed panel doors, except for the slab door. I have been a fan of the shaker door but it seems Americans still love their raised panel door.
The oak door does have a contemporary appeal with a blend of two types of grain pattern. The center panel with the very straight, linear grain pattern looks to be quarter sawn oak, The frames are rotary cut.
Very good update for Oak!
Thanks Susan!
The concepts and designs using oak are nice. The way you use your kitchen and the added features you hope to incorporate will dictate how you design the space.
Susan- Thanks so much for the Oak photo. I have just installed a very similiar look into my new kitchen and I have resisted telling clients and colleagues what style of cabinets I used fearing they would think I "cheaped out" by using Oak. Mine are Quartersawn which came at a premium but I love the texture and wanted to do something different. Maybe I'm ahead of the curve. You have vindicated me. Khat
I agree with Lauries comments. (The center panels are "rift" cut oak) I think americans are tired with standard random cut oak.
I have seen some great projects done with rift and quarter sawn.
The floors in one of our showroom displays are French white oak with knots and checking. A great look and a good alternative to knotty alder or pine.
good to see such nicely designed kitchens. space management is quite goood
This has to be one of the most unique things I have read about in a very long time. I love that idea and the design Can you tell me who's the designer?
That is an amazingly cozy kitchen. Love the effect of the dark panels on the room.
I really liked the wicker baskets for space management. Neat and tidy kitchen. Well organized.
Yes Indeed, Love the oak choice! Very different, stands out and would be a perfect back drop for the chandelier.
Also I came through this site about diff types of furniture. Great one!
Great use of wood!
We do have a golden oak kitchen (1986!) but the cabinets are custom made and we like it still although my chef husband had stainless steel counters and backsplash installed. The wood ceilings however (which we also have) soak up light. After 10 years we probably should get some lighting design help...
Susan I remember you from the dream house diaries on the Times website. Every so often when the latest downward real estate numbers come out, I think of Paul and Alison and wonder if their terrible timing came back to haunt them. Cheers-
I like the stark contrast of old world meets new world in wood floors, walls, roofs, meeting the stainless steel fridge/oven etc...
The cabinetry looks incredible.
Great Kitchen designs. Everything arranged perfectly.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the great pictures for a cold winter day (here in Detroit at least).
Great designed and unique style and very different. Soapstone counter tops looks amazing with the attached cabinets. Some more ideas on countertops here.
This used to be such an interesting and informative blog.
Susan, you're way too busy!
Oooh...I love me some rustic kitchens! These are fabulous! Great post!
I have to say this is the type of kitchen I would love to have. Being a country boy oak fits nice with my lifestyle. Thanks for the photos.
I love the woodwork and the feel of these spaces. You just want to go into them and relax.
I want a Scandinavian Kitchen please !!! Everyone of these photos of these Kitchens are outstanding ! I especially love the first image and then the one about mid section with all the baskets and the gray/blue color.
These images are all lovely! I especially like the last two.
Man, this thing's getting better and better as I learn more about it. It's exactly what I've been looking for. You guys rock!
