Grothouse Lumber

Clients can select blanks from many species of wood, and range in style from earthy Black Walnut or iridescent Sapele Mahogany. The live edge blanks are available in a great variety of lengths and widths to suit your particular design aesthetic. Grothouse Live Edge wood products embrace nature's design. The characteristic slab shapes, figure, cracks, mineral streaks and wormholes, ensure each piece is unique, as it is in nature. Each surface is meticulously sanded and finished. The result is a distinctive, yet functional art form.

Susan's notes: Grothouse Lumber is one of the most wonderful wood countertop sources that I could share with you. Why wonderful? They use FSC certified woods (not all, but there is a wide range of choices), they offer an abundance of choices of wood species, a 2-3 week lead time, lifetime warranty, beautiful patterns and edge details.

That said, I will share with you a comment I overheard somewhere in the last two weeks, perhaps while I was at ICFF. To paraphrase: "If I see one more live edge piece of furniture, I'll (fill in the blank)."

Is a live edge a trend? I have seen it in the marketplace in the past few years with increasing frequency. Tables, cabinetry, shelves, benches - it is clearly a trend. Will a live edge become a classic decorative detail? It remains to be seen - only time will tell.

Work a live edge product into the design with care, especially in regard to the formality of the design and materials. A contrast in style is great, one that I personally advocate, but must make sense in the design of the kitchen as well as the design of surrounding rooms. Look at the big picture of the design to see if a live edge "fits".
