Pottery Barn Lighting

I just saw this new fixture from Pottery Barn. It is showcased in their newsletter that I received. At first glance I really didn't care for it. Too...something. Contrived? Uninspired? Too much like other lighting fixtures that incorporate common objects like silverware or glasses, etc. etc?

Twenty seconds later, I think I like it. While I don't think I'd buy it, it's the sculptural quality of it that's speaking to me now. I think I'm over my initial cynical thoughts. I do like the use of two fixtures over a table, although these should be set further apart. Could be great for a kitchen dining area/breakfast room too.

What do you think? 1) Like it or 2) hate it or 3) a New Yorker's "eh" (with a smirk and a right tilt of the head-stop, let's not forget the half closed eyes)?

I absolutely LOVE this fixture! No smirk from me. ;)

eh... too contrived. Maybe it's that it seems too static. All the bottles perfectly line up, the same color.

Love it - especially for a cabin, maybe in North Georgia wine country.

Love Love Love it!

I don't really like it close up -- it looks better from a distance. I like the color when the light shines through it.

Hmmm. I guess it's interesting and different. But I won't be hanging one in my house any time soon! :-)

Love hearing your thoughts. Interesting! In some cases, it's the forest, in other cases it looks like the trees. :)

Love the color and the two over the table with light coming through, but I think the static quality would be offset by touches of the green glass above the rim, something that makes it more chandelier than bottle collection. It could be a ring above the cast iron or even "beads" on the supporting verticals. I just long for something that repeats the color in the piece.

I love the way two of them look together. Only if I had a country house. I just found your blog and I love it. I also wanted to invite you to participate in my giveaway. It started today and it will go on until Monday. Have a wonderful weekend!

I like it- Does it come with clear glass bottles? I think it would be fun to drink all the wine /or beer that would be used to make the light fixture instead of just having the bottles come with it. HA the higher priced labels on the bottles the better!

Cute for wine country, paying homage to recycling?

No.

Not a fan...I don't like to be negative, but they look like something my son would bring home from art class.

Well...on second thought, if my son brought them home, I would LOVE them!!

Maybe in a college bar where you know you can replace a bottle if one gets broken.

I agree that it looks like it would be a fixture in a college bar or cafe. Don't care for it for my kitchen/dining room

Eh. I like the color when the light is turned on, but up close, it is too cutesy, and because half the world gets the PB catalog, it would not be nearly as interesting as it might be if, say, you made one from your own old wine bottles. Everyone would know where it came from.

Eons ago (like decades), I babysat for a family in Greenwich Village who made a light fixture from a bunch cheese graters, with a bulb inside each grater. They were very proud of it; I thought it looked super goofy, but at least they made it themselves. I think it would be very in style now.

eh.
too literal. would like it better if they had cut the bottles. you would still know it was bottles, but altered.

Chloe, re your other comment, no worries. Only I have the supreme power of the delete button, which I rarely have to use. Thanks for your comment, always interested in your take.

hmms - i like it but i think it is more suited for a restaurant/lounge than a house - i think it would be to dark in a room with natural light.

I LOVE IT! One would have been lost, but two really set the table balance. Job well done!

I really like it too and I agree they should be further apart or even just one would be enough. You would have the right decor for it but I like it.

August 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPaulineh

I like it, but think it is missing something. maybe the same color cubed glasses. ;)

August 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDEE

i like it, though unlike others who mentioned country, i see it as rather urban. but i'm an urban glass artist so maybe thats why...

its cool, especially that it's being offered by pottery barn. i'd think if this was a custom artisan piece, you'd want a little more life in it, but this is pretty hot for a stock item.

Like it but would not buy it....too trendy and I think I would tire of it. I also agree witht the comment that it would be more beautiful if they cut the bottles on a diagonal giving more form and interest to the piece.
