Classic Kitchen Design In A NYC Apartment

Here is a treat (at least for me!) I'm not allowed to talk much about my kids (although I have SO much to talk about, trust me) so, I say very little. Much to my surprise, after a casual question to my daughter on Saturday, asking if I could shoot pictures of her kitchen (with her in it) for my blog, when we would visit later that day, she said "OK, only if you remember to bring in the candle we left behind last weekend." Yay! I made sure to remember the candle.

If I am the Queen of our family, my daughter is surely the princess (2 sons come after her) and NOW, as you may notice, we are all eagerly awaiting a BABY princess in a few months! Does life get any better?

My daughter and son in law are renting a great apartment on the upper west side of Manhattan, close to Central Park. It's in a quiet residential neighborhood and the building is one of those old, grand, buildings. The entire apartment was renovated beautifully before they moved in, including the kitchen.

It was a beautiful renovation of the kitchen. Custom cabinetry, fit to perfection. Appliances include a fabulous Sub Zero refrigerator (I told my daughter she's too young to have a Sub Zero), a Miele dishwasher (likewise) and higher end GE cooking appliances.

I'm not sure what material the countertop is. Maybe some sort of soapstone, although it does not appear to be affected by food substances. The lighting is fantastic and presents a vintage design statement, as do the multiple glass cabinets. And, what about that floor!? The kitchen has the flavor of a retro but classic New York City apartment, with modern conveniences. The pull out narrow pantry is just so useful.

My daughter loves to cook. She always cooks with fresh ingredients, and the wonderful gourmet markets in the area offer culinary inspiration, so we always look forward to being invited to dinner! Last night was black bean and cheese enchiladas, fresh guac (as we call it) and yellow rice.

And, I can tell you too that, no matter the size of the space, everyone ends up in the kitchen! My husband and my son and his girlfriend spent the evening with us too. So nice!

Note to daughter: Thanks for letting me shoot the kitchen! Love you!

Thanks Mom for the kind words! Actually if food stains means it's soapstone, it could be because egg whites have stained it before, only to be removed by a powerful counter scrub.

Although I can't say for sure what the counter IS, it doesn't look anything like soapstone to me. I have never seen any type of "fancy" edge like that on soapstone, as it would just be too prone to chipping.

The very even tone of the counter makes me think of something like Richlite.

Those lights are awesome. There's some <A HREF="http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod740064&navCount=1">similar ones</A> at RH right now.

Congrats on the grandkid-on-the-way!

So nice to see pics with the lovely food prep mess & people. Usually you have to imagine what goes on in photos of perfect empty rooms. Thanks for sharing!

Susan - congrats on the new little princess to be! And thanks for sharing that kitchen. I never lived in a rental that had a kitchen anywhere near as nice! Or even any condo I've owned. Jealously yours! Linda

Rachele, you're right, of course about the edge. Soapstone would readily chip/flake. thanks for the note!

Chloe, yeah, I figured just shoot it as is, mess and all. It's colorful anyway! In a small kitchen like that, things end up wherever they end up in the cooking process!

Linda, thanks for the note! Yes, she's a very lucky girl!

Lovely kitchen and the bun in the oven will be beautiful no doubt.

Such a beautiful kitchen! The use of glass in the upper doors really helps to keep the space from feeling extremely closed in. You are right...she is a lucky lady to have such a kitchen...it's nice to know she puts it to such good use by feeding family, friends and the newest family addition in a few months.

What a great kitchen! I visited NYC for the first time April 08 and wanted to see into some of those apartments so badly. I've lived in small town South Carolina my whole life so I am fascinated with city life. And I am realizing more and more than I actually prefer compact spaces. Thanks to you and your daughter for sharing this kitchen!

Wow. Lots to think about. I surf the net all the time looking for ideas for kitchens and baths because I want to make new ones for the wife and me. I'm a cabinetmaker, so I have a leg up on most, I suppose, but I also do NOT want to just do the same damned thing everyone else is doing. Also, we have some very small rooms, so it is a challenge, I'll tell you. I especially like what you have done with this much too small kitchen, though. The pantry is a wonderful addition. I also like the inset doors. They are a real sign of quality workmanship. Of course, now I'm going to have to do something like that to keep the wife happy, but that's part of the game, I guess! But thank you very much for sharing this. You have given me much to think about.

I live in New York and we are looking into replacing our kitchen. Would it be very upfront for me to ask which company supplied the cabinetry?
