retro kitchens - kitchen nostalgia or shredder material? #4
Welcome to this Saturday's special vintage kitchen, aka, "Bauhaus meets Disco"! I don't know why, (hmmm) but this one just popped out at me, as I perused my collection of vintage kitchens from the 60s and 70s. I think this kitchen was ahead of its time (for the early 60s), or perhaps was at the cusp of the disco era? You KNOW we need a disco ball light n the center of the ceiling! Get out your platform shoes and start dancing!
Not a badly planned kitchen, really, although I'd love to understand what's going on with that second island up front, where and how that is positioned in the room. Otherwise, the wall cabinets to the right of the refrigerator should have been equal size sets of doors. I'm not sure I could concentrate on reading a recipe in this kitchen, and I'm also not sure I'd go stir crazy after 20 minutes! Other than that, enjoy!

This is a picture I would love to scan in new surfaces to see what this room would look like transformed. The layout is not bad.
I see this layout plenty. Most of my clients want to rid the peninsula in favor of an island. With the width so narrow, keeping the peninsula is the best use of counter space. The second peninsula, I have come across this too. I think the thinking of the time was to allow two people to work in a narrow space. One thing I would do to update the space is add a prep sink next to the cook top. Or I would swap appliances: move the cooktop adjacent to where the fridge is now, make it a 36 or 48" range.
This is a fun one. Small kitchens are a bigger challenge then big kitchens.
You're right about that. I really enjoy small spaces, the smaller the better. I guess because each thought, each detail, has to be meaningful and really work perfectly, or else. I agree with your idea about a second sink, definitely. Yeah, it's a fun image!
Not sure how functional this room would be, but it's a fabulous picture!
what's black and white and red all over?
Ok old joke!
The stove seems a bit far for the rest of the work triangle, no? I have seen this layout before...
It's the ceiling and the floor that really get me!

My eyes are absolutely "jiggy" after a few seconds looking at this.
It's a geometry teacher's worst nightmare.
What a find!
Ha! I knew there would be easy jokes about these kitchens. Probably the lyrical inspiration for Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling"!
What a special surprise that ceiling is!
PS I haven't even started thinking about my kitchen for my Marrakesh houses yet. ~sigh.
im loving this photo. The colours are so bold and capturing, not seen a kitchen like this before.
good find.
Woah, this is impressive. Usually I imagine myself in a space, moving around, lounging, cooking; but I can't seem to get myself into this space, even in my imagination. Crazy fun!
