Green Kitchen Cabinets - All Or Nothing?

This is a good opportunity to introduce my colleague and friend, Kelly, who just started her blog on, what else, kitchens! It's called Kitchen Sync.

Kelly also has that golden attribute "experience," always a good thing.  Let's add to that, good judgment, good knowledge, and good creativity, and you have an interesting blog. I had asked Kelly if she wanted me to introduce her sooner or later. She forgot to answer that question, so, based on this great post she did today, it's right NOW!

Kelly talks about some of the challenges we designers face today in both identifying what is "green" and defining "green" in methods and materials involved in kitchen remodeling. I've talked about that too, and I agree, there just is no black or white, rather, shades of green. Ultimately, our clients will decide for themselves what their definition of green is. And, I, and Kelly, in the meantime, work hard to increase our knowledge of sustainable issues relating to our clients. Good stuff, Kelly.

Aw,thank you for the kind words! I couldn't figure out why I was getting so many hits today. (Boy, I'm slow.)

It's such a delightful thing to blog and reach out to not only people to help, but also to good friends in the business.

And isn't it exciting to be in design at this time?

Don't you love blogging? Experience is a good thing...It means there is lots to share. And, yes, the design landscape for kitchens is different in a bunch of areas. It's great to see smart progress and evolution that makes sense.

I am trying to understand Green Cabinets - mostly from a health perspective. Can anyone tell me if Kraft Maid is truly comparable to Crytal Green Core with it's low formaldehyde levels?

Sonja, it seems like a kitchen designer now must be a scientist! I'm sorry,I do not have information on the components of cabinets of different brands. It would be great if there were such a resource. I'd advise you to delve into the subject with a representative from each manufacture...go directly to the manufacturer.

I am trying to find a granite color that will work with my antique green kitchen cabinates. Any suggestions?

So many colors will work. Take a sample of the wood to a granite yard and just walk around and wait until you are inspired. Something will jump out at you, maybe a few things will, then you can begin to narrow it down.

This is for Sonja, re green kitchen cabinets: I read in the May/June 2008 issue of Smart Home Owner that there is a website for green kitchen cabinet manufacturuers: www.greencabinetsource.org. the website is produced by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers' Association. Both Kraftmaid and Crystal Cove are listed, and the site lists the criteria for being a green manufacturer. I don't know if that helps.
