Black Kitchens - Trending NOW!
I know you're ready for some wonderful kitchens! Last week was mostly an informational week, and I think we need a few days of kitchen eye candy, or, let's prepare dessert first in our kitchens!
What a treat today, to see THIS blog mentioned on Decor8, by Rachel Perls of Hue Consulting. Rachel talks about the "black" trend in all things interior design related, including kitchens. Black, absolutely, is a trend in kitchens. I'm observing this trend is only getting stronger. I have to say it is stunning. It may be best dressed up, as you see in the little black dress, always a classic.
But, is it a classic, in terms of kitchen cabinetry? That is the question! Surely, we are seeing so MUCH black these days, but I'm still not convinced it translates to a classic in the kitchen. I predict it will be dated in five years. I'd tread carefully around black, if you can resist it! Can you?
Take a look at Rachel's take on black. She is a color expert, and her point of view is interesting and insightful. Images from decor8.
Or, you may want to add a black accent piece, rather than commit to black in your cabinetry, as I did in this kitchen I designed before black was even a whisper! There are other black accents in and around this kitchen:

Well, I personally like black (or brown-black), but not too much of it. Of the four photos you posted, I like the second one most. The fourth would be nice if the wall cabinets weren't black too, imo.
I think about having a partly black kitchen myself, in our second home. Still not convinced though, because it is a rather small (but bright) place.
Connie, thanks for your comment. I agree, I like the second one as well. In the first image, the client wanted lots of froufrou detailing. Less is often more, but in the last two images, which are Gwyneth Paltrow's Ammagansett kitchen, I find the entire design to be uninspired as opposed to less is more.
I am loving the 2nd and 3rd ones! I am really thinking about black and white kitchens these days!
I reckon black works in big-size kitchens. Most of my clients don't take too kindly when black was proposed. Still waiting for the chance to propose a full glossy-black kitchen. I think it'd look really sexy.
Maryam, I hear you! I just suggested a black vanity in a master bath today, with light flooring. A beautiful combination.
blackcadillac73, I think you're right about using lots of black in a large space, it's much easier to do. Maybe suggesting a section of cabinetry in that black gloss will go over easier!
The third one is absolutely stunning. I love it!
Coming from you, Mr. Style, I'll take that compliment!
WE ARE PUTTING OUR KITCHEN TOGETHER AND IT'S LOOKING NICE. MOSTLY MEDIUM WOOD FINISHES WITH BLACK ACCENTS. THE TWO COLORS TOGETHER LOOK GREAT AND WHAT A MATCH FOR OUR WOODEN POT RACK WITH COPPER PANS. LOOKS VERY FRENCH COUNTRY. WE ALSO HAVE ROOSTER PICTURES FOR DECOR. I LOVE IT.
Jodi, yes, medium wood with black accents is really lovely. You can blend any wood color, really, with black. No rules. Just what looks good to you. It sounds great!
I just purchased a new home and I am kinda scared about the kitchen colour that we selected. It is a black cabinet with a light quartz counter top... i think it is kinda light beige. Also the floor is light as well...but it is not a large space, and I am scared it will make the kitchen look small...but after seeing the pics on this site...i feel a bit more comfortable. cross my fingers!
You will need good lighting, but it sounds like, with other light surfaces, you are on the right track. Just pay attention to lighting. I'm sure it will be stunning!
Thanks...that makes me feel somewhat better. I am not sure if anyone has or can find any pics that i can see using the same cabinets that i chose, it would help....it is calleed 5400 monroe lunar by raywal. its on their site raywal kitchens. If not thats cool...thanks anyhow!
Wow...I'm planning on using black painted base cabinets and I'm really surprised you think that black is trendy. I always thought of black as being timeless.
Leslie, it depends on how it is used. I do have one question...do you think you would have thought to paint a piece of furniture black five years ago? If not, you may be responding to a trend and are not fully aware of it. No right or wrong, just good to be aware.
I too am stuck about what color to paint my kitchen cabinets. They are currently a nasty blue ( we just moved in) We bought all new black appliances and we have brown faux granite(formica) countertops. Our floor is light beige tile and the sink is light beige as well.I will paint the walls a lighter color.I think black is becoming the only option.I was considering dark brown but think it will be just dark and look like painted brown cabinets. It think the black will look deliberate. The woodwork around the windows and french doors are white as well as the molding.Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I HATE the blue and it needs to go ASAP.The strange thing is that my last house was blue and white and I loved it but this blue is just so bad. Thanks and looking forward to hearing any suggestions or comments
You may want to try something that is a few shades darker than the tile floor, but in the same tonal range, sort of a khaki/mushroom shade. Be careful of green vs pink vs other undertones.
I just painted my bleached oak cabinets black,They look fabulous, now I have to order my granite counters and Im debating on gold with black or a nice white careea marble with grey veining through it
Black kitchens just what the doctor ordered. Great images and we linked you to our blog at the www.theestateofthings.com, please come visit sometime and say hello. What's your opinion on the durability of marble countertops?
Your blog is a great source of inspiration. Thanks.
My son is renovating a 1970's ranch and wants a black and stainless kitchen, he bought dark gray marble tile for the counter top. He wants to use the existing cabinets but paint them black. His space is U shaped and about medium size. Would it look ok, he's only 23 and has alot eclectic ideas.
I am after some advice if you could help me. I am having a high gloss black kitchen fitted in a few weeks time, but I am struggeling to decide what colour work top and what colour to paint the walls.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
I'm choosing the colouts for a really small kitchen. I want the cabinets to be a combination of steel/wenge, but havent decided about the countertop and splash.
The kitchen is really small, walls are almost white, so I wonder if its a good idea to choose "black" granite for the countertop, or is it better to use a light color or steel. Same thing fot the splash.
Any ideas will be apprecieated. Thanks.
